There is bad news for any former UK car workers hoping for a job in Ontario, Canada. In the wake of rival carmaker Ford’s record-breaking losses, Chrysler is now planning to shed up to 2,000 of its 11,500 people in Canada.
According to the Globe and Mail, industry sources said Chrysler is likely to:
- Reduce vehicle production at Windsor and Brampton. Currently 5,500 workers assemble Caravan and Town and Country minivans and Pacifica crossover utility vehicles in Windsor and 4,200 Canadian Auto Workers union members assemble Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum and Charger cars in Brampton.
- Close or further downsize the Etobicoke Casting Plant in Toronto. 450 people work at the Etobicoke plant making pistons and other engine components for Chrysler engine plants in the United States.
- Contract out jobs done by union employees at DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc.
- Reduce the number of salaried employees from the current level of 1,500.
