Jobs Boost for Queensland
Close to 300 permanent jobs will be created this year in Queensland as mining company Rio Tinto has been given permission to more than double production at its Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone, north of Brisbane.
The resources giant said the upgrade at the world’s biggest alumina refinery would double production of the metal to 3.4 million tonnes by 2011.
A surge in global demand for alumina, which is made into aluminium used in cars, planes and construction, is expected to prompt another multibillion-dollar upgrade in the next few years.
About 2,200 jobs will be created at the peak of construction in 2009, with an average of 1,600 workers over the three-year period. Upon completion, about 270 new positions will be created, joining the existing work crew of about 500 full-time staff at the $1.5 billion plant.
